How To Move Houses With Pets

Janet Alexander

Moving to a new home can be a stressful process for you, but it can also be extremely trying for your pets. New environments and a lack of understanding regarding what's going on can cause a great deal of stress for your animals as they try and adjust to the new status quo. Thankfully, there are a few things that you can do to help make moving day easier for everyone, such as:

Keep Overnight Supplies

The most important thing that you can do when moving your pet with you to a new home is to keep a handful of necessary supplies with you. Keeping favorite toys, beds, and a collection of litter, food, and treats can help you keep your pet occupied during the moving process, and can help maintain a level of familiarity that can reduce their stress levels.

Maintain the Routine

Besides keeping familiar items with your pet during moving day, it's a good idea to try your best to keep your schedule the same. This means you should walk and feed your animals at around the same time, if possible.

Keep Your Pets Isolated, Then Move with Them

You don't want your animals running around throughout the house as you pack things and begin to move them into the moving truck, especially if you have professional movers working in your home as well. This can be a huge source of stress and can run the risk of your animals sneaking out of your home in the chaos. Keeping them in a kennel or in a single room in your home until the bulk of the moving and packing is done is a good idea to prevent them from becoming emotionally distressed.

However, when it times come to actually move into your new home, you want to make sure that your pets travel with you, in a vehicle that they are already familiar with. If they're around you in a new environment, their stress levels will be somewhat mitigated.

Introduce them Slowly

You'll want to introduce your animals to your new home slowly, so they have the time to get adjusted to their new environment. It would be best to introduce them to a single room at first, preferably somewhere that's already completely furnished, and allow them to adjust before you let them out into the larger home.  For cats, it may be a good idea to prevent them going outside for a while (or even permanently), since they may have trouble finding their way back home at first.

About Me
Storing A Better Way

After I started organizing my basement, I could tell that there were a few serious problems with my previous storage procedure. In addition to finding more than a few issues with damaged items, I also had a problem tracking down the things that I needed, which was frustrating. I wanted to streamline the experience, so I started going through everything and getting rid of things I didn't need. It was difficult at first, but after a few boxes, things became much easier to handle. Check out this blog for great information on storing the smart way and avoiding trouble in the long run.
